  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups finely chopped apples (preferably Granny Smith)
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time to the butter-sugar mixture, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients alternately with sour cream.
  6. Fold in the chopped apples and nuts if using.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and sprinkle turbinado sugar on top.
  8. Bake for about 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  9. Cool in the pan for about ten minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
